Frequently asked questions

How It Works

What is StablePin?

StablePin is a magnetic hook designed for equestrian environments. It uses a strong neodymium magnet and an adhesive-backed silicone rubber base to grip ferrous metal surfaces - no drilling, no fixings, no permanent damage. Mount it, load it, move it. That's it.

What surfaces does StablePin work on?

StablePin works on ferrous metal surfaces only - steel being the most common. This includes most metal stable doors, horsebox panels, tack room walls, and trailer interiors. It willnotwork on aluminium, wood, plastic, or non-magnetic stainless steel. If you're unsure whether a surface is compatible, a simple fridge magnet test will tell you - if it sticks, StablePin will too.

Does it leave marks or damage the surface?

StablePin is designed to be repositionable without causing damage. The silicone backing helps protect the surface from scratching. To keep surfaces in good condition, alwayslift StablePin cleanly away - don't slide it across the surface. On painted or powder-coated panels, occasional cleaning of both the hook base and the surface will help maintain a clean grip and avoid any build-up that could mark the finish.

Can I use StablePin in a horsebox or trailer?

Yes - StablePin is well suited to horseboxes and trailers where drilling isn't possible or desirable. It works on steel interior walls and partitions.Bear in mind that vibration during travel can reduce holding strength over time. We recommend testing your hook with your intended load before regular use, and checking it periodically for any movement or wear.

Sizing & Capacity

Which size should I choose?

If you're not sure where to start, the Coreis our best seller and works well for most everyday uses - headcollars, lead ropes, grooming bags, and lighter tack.

What does "Safe Working Load" mean?

Every StablePin is rated to a Safe Working Load (SWL) - the maximum weight we recommend hanging from it under normal use.Our SWL figures are rated at 25% of the tested slip weight on clean 1mm mild steel under a vertical load. This built-in safety margin means real-world performance should comfortably exceed your day-to-day use, even on slightly less ideal surfaces.

⚠️ Always test a hook with your intended load before regular use. Do not exceed the stated SWL. Performance may vary on painted, coated, or uneven surfaces.

Will it hold a hay net?

The Max (three magnets, rated to 2.49kg SWL) is the appropriate size for hanging a hay net, and must only be used in a location that is not directly accessible to your horse.

🚫Never hang a hay net from StablePin inside the stable or enclosure where your horse can reach it.Horses may pull, chew, or dislodge the hook, which creates a risk of ingesting plastic or magnet components - this could cause serious harm. StablePin is not designed to withstand direct interference from a horse.

Suitable locations might include outside the stable door, in a tack room, or mounted on the exterior of a horsebox where the horse cannot access it.

Can I use multiple hooks together for a heavier load?

Using multiple hooks to share a load is not something we recommend or have tested for. Each hook is rated individually, and load distribution between multiple hooks is unpredictable without proper testing. For heavier items, always choose the appropriately rated StablePin size rather than combining smaller hooks.

Safety & Use

Can I leave StablePin unsupervised near my horse?

No. StablePin should never be left unsupervised in areas directly accessible to your horse. Horses are inquisitive animals and will often investigate - and potentially chew, pull, or dislodge - anything within reach. If a hook is damaged or pulled down by a horse, there is a risk of ingesting plastic or magnet components, which could cause serious internal injury.Always position StablePinout of reach of your horse. Suitable locations include tack rooms, aisleways, wash bays, and the exterior of stable doors.

Is StablePin safe around pacemakers or medical devices?

StablePin uses strong neodymium magnets which can interfere with pacemakers, defibrillators, and other implanted medical devices. Anyone with such a device should keep StablePin at a safe distance and consult their medical professional if in doubt. The magnets can also affect sensitive electronics, credit cards, and magnetic storage devices - keep them away from these items.

Is StablePin suitable for children?

StablePin is not suitable for children under 12 years. The product contains small neodymium magnets which pose a choking and ingestion hazard if separated from the hook. Keep out of reach of young children at all times.

Can StablePin be used outdoors?

Yes - StablePin is suitable for indoor and outdoor use under normal conditions. However, prolonged exposure to extreme heat, cold, or direct sun may affect the PETG body or magnet performance over time. We recommend avoiding placement directly in the sun or near heat sources where possible.

What should I do if the hook feels like it's slipping?

First, remove the load and check the surface - even a thin layer of dust, grease, or stable debris can significantly reduce grip. Clean both the surface and the silicone base of the hook with a dry cloth, then reapply. If slipping continues, consider whether the surface is fully ferrous, and whether the weight you're hanging is within the stated SWL for that size. If in doubt, step up to a larger size or contact us.

Installation

How do I fit StablePin?

No tools required. Simply:

  1. Wipe your surface clean and dry
  2. Hold StablePin firmly and place it against the surface - the magnet will pull it into position
  3. Test the position with a light load before hanging anything heavier

To remove, always lift cleanly away from the surface - don't slide it, as this can scratch painted or coated metal.

Do I need to prepare the surface first?

A clean, dry surface will always give you the best grip. Wipe away any dust, oil, or debris before mounting. You don't need any special preparation - just make sure the surface is ferrous (magnetic) and in reasonable condition.Heavily painted, powder-coated, or uneven surfaces may reduce holding strength slightly compared to bare steel. If you notice reduced grip, clean both surfaces and try again.

Can I use StablePin in any orientation?

StablePin is designed and tested for vertical load(hanging weight downward). This is the most common use case and the load direction used in our SWL testing. Using it in other orientations - for example, pulling outward or at an angle - may result in lower holding strength and is outside the tested range.

My hook isn't gripping as well as expected - what should I do?

The most common causes and fixes:

  1. Dirty surface or base - clean both with a dry or lightly damp cloth
  2. Non-ferrous surface - confirm the surface is magnetic
  3. Overloaded - check the weight is within the stated SWL
  4. Air gap - even a 0.1mm gap can noticeably reduce pull force; check the hook is sitting flush

How do I clean StablePin?

Wipe down the hook body and silicone base with a clean, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth is fine. Avoid harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners - these can degrade the silicone backing or the plastic body over time.

Will the magnet weaken over time?

Neodymium magnets are very stable under normal conditions and do not significantly degrade over time. The most common cause of reduced magnetic performance is physical damage - dropping or striking the magnet can cause chipping or cracking, which reduces pull force. Handle with care and inspect periodically.
